Health Insurance System

Foreign residents who live in Japan are required to be enrolled in some kind of a health insurance to be able to receive medical treatment at ease in case of injury or illness by paying insurance tax.

Persons required to be enrolled in National Health Insurance

Those registered as residents within Tsukuba City, who cannot enroll in the health insurance at their place of employment.

However, those whose visa status is "diplomat", "official" or "designated activities for medical purpose", and those whose visa is expired, or those whose visa status is "temporary visitor" who stays no longer than 3 months (unless you have documents that proves your stay is longer than 3 months) are NOT eligible.

If any of the following conditions apply, go through procedures within 14 days.

Enroll in National Health Insurance

When you moved into the city

Required documents

• Passport
• Residence card
• My Number

When you cancelled the health insurance or your place of employment

Required documents

• Certificate of cancellation from the place of employment
• Residence card
• My Number
• Passport

When a child is born

Required documents

• National Health Insurance card
• Bank booklet
• Residence card

Withdraw from National Health Insurance

When you move out of the city (including when you leave Japan)

Required documents

• National Health Insurance card
• My Number
• Residence card

When you enroll in health insurance of your place of employment

Required documents

• Health insurance card of your place of employment
• National Health Insurance card
• My Number
• Residence card

Note

You MUST submit a notification to cancel National Health Insurance. If you do not submit the notification, you will continue to be enrolled in the insurance and will be charged insurance tax.
