Mayor’s Comment: Request for Ibaraki residents from Ibaraki Governor (January 7, 2022)

At a press conference today (January 7), Ibaraki Governor Oigawa announced a request for the residents of Ibaraki Prefecture in response to the
surge in COVID-19 cases in the Prefecture. As of January 7, the weekly average has increased 11.6 times compared to the previous week, with four people newly infected with the Omicron variant. While expressing a sense of crisis that if this tendency continued, the number of cases could approach 200 a day in a week’s time, the Governor made the following three requests to the residents of the Prefecture:

  • People can attend a coming-of-age ceremony under the condition that they have been vaccinated twice or tested negative for COVID-19.
  • When eating out, the maximum number of people sitting at one table is four. However, the number can be five or more under the condition that restaurants can confirm everyone in a group has been vaccinated twice or tested negative for COVID-19.
  • People should avoid non-essential travel to and from Okinawa, Yamaguchi and Hiroshima Prefectures which are under intensive measures.

With the outbreak of the Omicron variant, the number of infection cases continues to surge in Ibaraki Prefecture and nationwide. Some resources suggest that the symptoms of the Omicron variant are often mild, but as the absolute number of cases increases so will the number of severe cases, which could overwhelm the healthcare system. To slow down the speed of the
spread and flatten the peak of COVID-19 as much as possible, please cooperate
with the requests from the Governor, and continue to thoroughly observe the
basic preventative measures.
