Mayor’s comment regarding ceasing the acceptance of COVID-19 patients at “Akamatsu”, the accommodation facility in Toyosato Yukari no Mori (September 25, 2020)

Provisional Translation

To help prevent the collapse of the health system due to the spread of COVID-19, from April 14th Tsukuba City made “Akamatsu” (the public accommodation facility inside Toyosato Yukari no Mori Nature Park) available to Ibaraki Prefecture to be used for accommodating patients with COVID-19 who were asymptomatic or displaying minor symptoms. Since then, 69 patients have been accommodated at Akamatsu. Now, however, Ibaraki Prefecture has secured other facilities for accommodating such patients, and so as of September 14, Akamatsu has ceased to be used for this purpose.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the local landowners and residents, as well as everyone in nearby facilities for their generous understanding and cooperation regarding the acceptance of patients at Akamatsu. The Governor of Ibaraki Prefecture has also kindly offered the following words: “The acceptance of patients with mild symptoms at this facility provided a vital buffer for hospital beds in medical institutions. It is no exaggeration to state that allowing some patients to be accommodated at Akamatsu meant that hospitals could focus on treating people with more serious symptoms and this served to prevent the collapse of the medical system in Ibaraki Prefecture”.

We are now working with the Prefecture to disinfect the facilities and restore them to their original condition. We will, therefore, re-open “Akamatsu” on October 8 for overnight stays.

Tatsuo Igarashi
Mayor of Tsukuba
