Birth, Death, Marriage and Divorce Notifications

Family Register Notification

Foreign residents must also notify birth and death within Japan to the city hall. You may also notify marriage and divorce. Notification is free of charge.

Birth Notification

Father or mother must submit the birth notification form to the city hall of the place of birth or the parent's residence within 14 days including the day of birth.

After the birth notification, following procedures may be necessary.

• Application for resident (visa) status at the Tokyo Regional Immigration Services Bureau in Shinagawa within 30 days from birth.
  -Mito, Utsunomiya, Saitama, Chiba, and Matsudo branch offices are in charge of Ibaraki residents.
• Procedures related to your home country (Procedures will be taken place at embassies and consulates)

Death Notification

Family member (relative) or person living in the same household must submit the notification form to the city hall of the place of death or the residence of the notifier within 7 days from the day knowing the death.

Marriage Notification

The marriage becomes legally effective from the date of notification.
If you marry a Japanese citizen, you should submit the marriage notification form to the city hall of the permanent domicile or the present residence. If you are both foreign residents, submit the form to the city hall of the present residence. Required documents for marriage notification differs according to the nationality, so please contact the city hall beforehand.
(Note)Please report the marriage to your home country as well.

Divorce Notification

The divorce becomes legally effective from the date of notification.
If you divorce a Japanese citizen, submit the divorce notification form to the city hall of the permanent domicile or the present residence. If you are both foreign residents, submit the form to the present residence.
Please contact the city hall beforehand about the required documents for divorce notification.
(Note)Please report the divorce to your home country as well.
